Dogs of all shapes and sizes had fun while riding and conquering the waves at the World Dog Surfing Championships in California. The contest was divided in various categories according to the size of the dogs: small, medium, large and very large dogs. The dogs competed solo, tandem or partnered with a human. It is officially called the ‘Norcal Dog Surfing event & World Championships’ and was founded in 2016. At the mega event, dogs in wetsuits were seen riding the waves. The canine, who were trained to surf, displayed their skills at the championship. A huge crowd of people gathered to enjoy the canines surfing show. Dogs surfed with the assistance of a human who selects the wave or waves for the dog to ride. In the non-tandem portion of the contest, first, second, and third place were awarded in each weight class based on ride length, technique, and attitude as well as wave size. This fundraising event raises money for animal, surfing, and environmental charities. The very first Surf Dog competition in history was proposed by the author of the book, ‘The Dog's Guide to Surfing’. After approaching a local Southern California hotel to host the competition, the debut event took place at the Loews Coronado hotel in San Diego. That event's success was so great that it has spawned similar dog surfing events across the world, including many in California, Florida, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
